Strengthening the Community

Using our region’s unique maritime treasures as “living classrooms” to educate students and the public

What we believe:
We believe our maritime heritage program…

  • enables residents and visitors to gain greater understanding of the broad history and culture of our community and nation.
  • brings to vivid life the people who served on our vessels and stood watch in our lighthouses, enabling our visitors to move from passive observers to active learners.
  • is a powerful demonstration to teachers about how to excite their students’ curiosity and their appetite for learning.
  • affords youth and young adults who live in high risk environments the opportunity for positive work experiences and development of marketable job skills.

In partnership with the City and State, Living Classrooms Foundation manages the National Historic Seaport of Baltimore, an umbrella organization unifying the historic sites and neighborhoods around the Inner Harbor. The National Historic Seaport promotes historic preservation and heritage tourism, and creates living classrooms for education and job training. It includes the following entities managed by Living Classrooms Foundation: Historic Ships in Baltimore, Friends of Fort McHenry, the Frederick Douglass–Isaac Myers Maritime Park and Museum, and the Inner Harbor Paddleboats.
