Living Classrooms Foundation Accounting Department

Accounting Administrative Internship

Duties: Intern duties include invoice processing, organized filing, document scanning and general office duties.

Qualifications:  Prospective intern should have a strong desire to work and learn in a dynamic office environment, basic computer proficiency, and solid oral and written communication skills.  Familiarity with accounting software is desirable, but not necessary.

Starting date and related details: 2-month opportunity with flexible starting/ ending date.  Intern must be able to work at least 15 hours a week during standard business hours.

Location: Baltimore City

Hands-on Education and Job-Training Programs for Urban Youth

The Crossroads School

Duties: Intern duties include phone and email contact with alumni, assisting with development of tracking system, recording and retention of valuable alumni data, administrative assistance and general office duties.

Qualifications:  Prospective intern should be reliable and punctual with an ability to adapt to an ever-evolving environment.  Intern should be self-motivated and be able to communicate clearly via the spoken and written word.  Intern should be comfortable working with students and populations from diverse backgrounds.  Basic computer proficiency required.

Starting date and related details: Late April- mid June, 5-10 hours a week during standard school hours.

Location: Baltimore City

Comments: This is an unpaid but highly rewarding internship opportunity.

Fresh Start Program

Spring, Summer, Fall Student Development Coordinator Intern

Interns’ duties include assisting with student recruitment process, assisting with developing and implementing student retention techniques, assisting with record keeping and database utilization, and assisting with conflict resolution. Interns will observe and then co-plan and facilitate student seminars. Interns should encourage and cultivate social, cultural, and recreational activities and assist with the overall social development of the students.

Qualifications: Interns in this position should be studying a field dealing with human services or social sciences including, but not limited to, social work, sociology, psychology, counseling, humanities, education etc. Interns are responsible for developing and following a consistent work schedule that includes at least one seminar time.

Starting Dates: Internships are available for Spring, Summer, and Fall Semesters.

Deadlines: Spring Interns should apply by mid-December; Summer Interns should apply by early May; and Fall Interns should apply by the first week in September.

Comments: These internships are unpaid positions. Part and full-time internships are available.

Carmelo Anthony Youth Development Center Programming

Spring and Fall Internships

During the school year, the Center runs an after school program from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. for children ages 5-12, and from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. for youth ages 13-18. Interns at the Carmelo Anthony Youth Development Center will work with trained staff to provide services in five core areas: Education and Career Development, Character and Civic Development, Health and Life Skills, The Arts and Cultural Enrichment, and Sports and Recreation. Interns may also assist in a variety of community events such as immunization and lead screening, youth workshops and conferences, job fairs, family night activities, and basketball tournaments.  

Qualifications: A prospective intern should be reliable, enthusiastic and able to work with students of all backgrounds. Interns should be self-motivated, cooperative and a good group leader. Teaching experience is a plus, but not a requirement.

Starting Dates: Internships are available for Spring and Fall semesters.

Location: Baltimore City

Deadlines: Spring interns should apply by early December. Fall interns should apply by early September.

Comments: This is an unpaid internship.

Summer Internships

Camp Melo Summertime Fun & Discovery is an eight-week summer camp experience sponsored by the Carmelo Anthony Youth Development Center, where 100 Baltimore City youth from six public housing developments engage in activities from late June through mid August. Interns at Camp Melo will help trained staff to promote extended learning opportunities for campers though fun and interactive activities. These include sports, fine arts, fun and games, technology, music, drama, and dance. 

Qualifications: A prospective intern should be enthusiastic, energetic, and able to work with students of diverse backgrounds. Interns should be reliable, well-spoken, and patient. Teaching experience is a plus, but not a requirement. 

Starting Dates: Mid-June to Mid-August

Location: Baltimore City

Deadlines: Summer interns should apply by early May.

Comments: This is an unpaid internship. 

BUGS (Baltimore Urban Gardening with Students)

Interns will work with our experienced educational staff and will be trained to help provide our students with hands-on academic enrichment activities. Interns will assist with programs involving Cooking/Nutrition, Gardening and the Environment, Creative Movement and Dance, and Creative Art. Interns will assist in taking the students camping and on other outdoor field trips. To learn more about BUGS, visit www.bugsprogram.org.

Qualifications: A prospective intern should be reliable, enthusiastic and able to work with students of all backgrounds. Interns should be self-sufficient, cooperative and flexible. Teaching experience is a plus, but not a requirement.

Starting Dates: Positions start during the week of July 4th and run for eight weeks, Monday – Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Interns may also be required to work occasional overnight and weekend programs or field trips.

T-CAP Summer Program for The Crossroads School

The goal of T-CAP is to provide supplemental academic and enrichment programs to Crossroads School students through after school programming and summer programming. 

Qualifications: A prospective intern should be cooperative, self-motivated and energetic. Interns should be patient, flexible, and enthusiastic about working with students. Teaching experience is a plus, but not a requirement.

Starting Dates: The summer camp operates July 9 - August 3, 2007; Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Shipboard and Environmental Education Programs

Shipboard Education Programs

Spring and Fall Internships

Interns will work alongside our experienced educational staff and will be trained to lead a wide variety of hands-on activities onboard one of our three historic vessels. Most of an intern's time will be devoted to interacting with, teaching, and supervising students of all ages and learning abilities. Additional duties include maintenance of educational equipment and assisting with program coordination. During the school year, most trips run weekdays from 9:30 - 2:30, with occasional weekend and evening programs.

Qualifications: A prospective intern should be enthusiastic, well-spoken, reliable, flexible, able to work with students from diverse backgrounds, and interested in Chesapeake Bay ecology and history. Interns should also work well with others and function productively with minimal supervision. Science background or teaching experience is a plus, but not a requirement.

Starting Dates: Positions are available from March – June and September - November. Length of internships may vary.

Location: Inner Harbor of Baltimore

Deadlines: Spring interns should apply by early February and fall interns by early August.

Comments: These internships are unpaid positions. Living Classrooms Foundation can provide some information about housing, but securing housing is the responsibility of the intern. Be advised that the requirements of this internship make it difficult to hold an outside job.

Summer Internships

Interns will work with our experienced educational staff and will be trained to lead various hands-on activities aboard one of our historic vessels. Interns will work with students that are studying the Blue Crab and the Eastern Oyster while on board the vessels.  Interns will camp with students and other staff in locations throughout the Chesapeake. Interns will support the program by organizing meals, assisting students at the campsite, and assisting with educational activities on board the vessels as well as on land.  These summer trips range from seven to nine days in length. 

Qualifications: A prospective intern should be enthusiastic, well-spoken, reliable, flexible, able to work with students from diverse backgrounds, and interested in Chesapeake Bay ecology and history. Interns should also work well with others and function productively with minimal supervision. Science background or teaching experience is a plus, but not a requirement. Interns must be at least 18 years of age to drive LCF vehicles.

Starting Dates: Positions are available from June to August.

Location: Chesapeake Bay

Deadlines: Summer interns should apply by early May.

Comments: These internships are paid positions. Interns should be comfortable with camping as well as operating a 15-passenger van.

O’Brien Sailing Center

Summer Internship

Summer interns are needed at the O’Brien Sailing Center (OSC). OSC gives students the opportunity to learn how to sail while sharpening their academic and social skills. The intern will work with our experienced staff to help teach the students sailing and rowing, as well as implement other educational activities, such as conducting science experiments, writing daily journal entries, creating art projects, and making many discoveries of maritime history. During the summer of 2007, OSC programming will begin June 18 and end August 3.

Qualifications: A prospective intern should be reliable, enthusiastic, cooperative, and able to work with students of diverse backgrounds. The intern should be interested in education and Chesapeake Bay ecology and history. Sailing and educational experience are a plus, but not a requirement.

Starting Dates: The position is available from early June through the beginning of August. This position requires a commitment of 40 hours/week.

Maritime Heritage Programs

National Historic Seaport of Baltimore (NHS)

Spring, Summer, & Fall Semester Internships

The National Historic Seaport of Baltimore is a group of maritime attractions along Baltimore’s waterfront.  Interns are needed for marketing and promotional events primarily focusing on three museums: the USS Constellation, the Baltimore Maritime Museum, and the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park. Interns will assist corporate marketing staff in creating information tour group packages, designing event flyers, and attending promotional events. Interns will receive a well-rounded exposure to the marketing and tourism industry.

Qualifications: Interns must be cooperative, enthusiastic, and conscientious. Interns should have a strong interest in the history of Baltimore and the tourism industry that surrounds it.  Interns should be well-spoken and comfortable working with large groups of people. Administrative skills and a knowledge of Microsoft Office and database management are required. 

Starting Dates: Internships are available for the Spring, Summer, and Fall Semesters.

Deadlines: Spring Interns should apply by mid-December; Summer Interns should apply by early May; and Fall Interns should apply by the first week in September.

Frederick Douglas-Isaac Myers Maritime Park and Museum

Spring, Summer, & Fall Semester Internships

Interns will be working with experienced museum staff to achieve a well-rounded experience in museum operations. Interns will participate in and learn about several aspects of the museum business including, but not limited to, special events work, development, marketing, administrative operations, heritage preservation, and education. This internship would be an amazing opportunity for those interested in the museum industry.

Qualifications: Interns must be well-spoken, confident, and able to work with and manage large groups of people. Interns should have a strong interest in heritage preservation and African-American history. Interns should be self-motivated and able to work well with others in a museum environment. Interns must be at least 18 years of age to apply.

Starting Dates: Internships are available for the Spring, Summer and Fall Semesters.

Deadlines: Spring Interns should apply by mid-December; Summer Interns should apply by early May; and Fall Interns should apply by the first week in September.

At Living Classrooms Foundation, several of our programs offer mentoring opportunities as an advanced form of volunteering. Mentors share their knowledge and experience with young people in need of the support that can help them succeed in school and life.
