Mute Swan
Cygnus olor
Introduced in the 19th century from Europe and Asia
for their ornamental value, the mute swan has had a detrimental impact on the Chesapeake Bay's ecology.
These very aggressive swans often interfere with the nesting habits of native waterfowl and have been
known to attack and kill the native tundra swan as well as other species of birds. In addition,
their feeding habits have destroyed SAV (submerged aquatic vegetation) beds that are vital for
many other species and the overall health of the Chesapeake Bay.
