Message from the President...
This year, Living Classrooms Foundation entered our third decade of transforming lives and serving the community. Our many programs and initiatives are working each day to motivate and educate youth, train unemployed and underemployed young adults to be successful in the work world, revitalize our community, support schools and neighborhoods, and celebrate the heritage of our city, state, and region.
We are deeply appreciative of the Foundation’s many supporters, and we are committed to showing a strong return on your investments. Living Classrooms programs are data-driven, continually evolving to respond to the needs of youth and our community, and always focused on results.
In this issue of The Navigator, we have highlighted several of our programs that are making a major difference in the lives of our students and in the community, including the highly successful Crossroads School; our community revitalization and job-training program, Project SERVE, and its expanding ex-offender Re-entry program; and our Fresh Start program, which is training high-risk youth in marketable careers.
Thanks to the generosity of NBA star Carmelo Anthony, we are serving children from six public housing communities in East Baltimore at the 20,000 square foot Youth Development Center located on E. Fayette Street. Hundreds of at-risk youth visit the center daily and participate in educational programming and recreational activities during the critical out-of-school hours.
We also want to draw your attention to the grand opening of the Frederick Douglass–Isaac Myers Maritime Park, which took place on June 28th. The Douglass–Myers Maritime Park has been under development over the past six years to become a Living Classrooms Foundation educational campus and a premier cultural heritage center. As the historic gateway to Fells Point, the campus celebrates the contributions of Frederick Douglass and Isaac Myers, both of whom persevered and overcame adversity to achieve great success, and whose life stories inspire the youth we serve.
The Douglass–Myers Maritime Park and Museum allows for an expansion of Living Classrooms’ hands-on education and job skills training programs for youth as well as a special museum available for students and the general public. We hope that you will visit this dynamic new campus, which will be alive with historic ship repair projects, interactive exhibits, and educational and cultural programs.
Thank you for supporting all of the work that Living Classrooms Foundation does to help young people build successful lives and to provide resources that benefit our whole community.
