Bay Buddies Invites Special Needs Students to Explore Baltimore

The second week of August kicked off our 16th year delivering hands-on STEM education and enrichment to 80 students with special needs, while they explore Baltimore's environment and waterways over a two-week period.

This year's Bay Buddies program began at the Maryland Science Center where students learned about whales. The following day they visited our Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center where they explored the theme "hard vs. soft" through a variety of hands-on stations that incorporated a nature walk, mural, binoculars, and lawn games. After exploring our waterfront environmental retreat, they took to the sea aboard our historic vessel, Sigsbee, where they learned about marine life, navigation, and salt vs. fresh water while sailing the Inner Harbor.

The students will participate in a "graduation" ceremony at the end of the program that invites parents and families to take part in games and activities and celebrate the students' achievements. Bay Buddies is a collaborative project supported jointly by The Arc Baltimore, Baltimore City Public Schools, Baltimore County Public Schools, and Living Classrooms Foundation.
